Ernie Leo Laurence
Funeral services for Ernie Laurence, 68, long time Rockdale Junior High principal, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Phillips & Luckey Chapel with burial in the Laurence family cemetery near Rockdale.
Ministers Milton Pogue of Taylor, and Terry Northcutt of Rockdale officiated.
Mr. Laurence died about 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in Athens, Greece, where he had been taking medical treatment. He had resided in Rockdale for the past 27 years.
Mr. Laurence was born Jan. 28, 1916 at Thornton to Mr. and Mr. John Huey (Mattie) Laurence. He was a retired principal, coach and teacher, having been in education for 38 years.
He and Lillian Leonard were married Oct. 16, 1937 in Houston.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian Laurence of Rockdale, three sons, Ronald Earl Laurence of Arlington, Donald Ray Laurence, or Texarkana, and Ernest Wayne Laurence of Killeen, one daughter Charlotte Ann Woodridge of Kaufman, one sister Dr.Ruby Morris of Dallas; also, thirteen grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Clois Green, Travis Grindle, N.E, Alford, Jr., Ernie Moore, Joe Hedrick and Fred Powers.
Honorary pall bearers were Cecil Hicks, Carlos, Fritz, Jack Clark, Freeman Nixon, Weldon Fritz, Cliff Clark, Gary Jackson, Jack Cooper, Dan Jenkins, Walter Dean., L.B. Kubiak, Josh Spiers, Johnny George, Ralph Laskie, Don Wardlow, and elders and deacons of the Murray Street Church of Christ.
Mr. Laurence was an elder of the Murray Street Church of Christ. He was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor in July 1981.
A letterman in football and baseball at Rice University, Mr. Laurence’s career in education encompassed the following towns: Cedar Bayou 1930-1941, Hull-Daiestta, 1942-1944, Conroe 1945, Franklin, 1946-1948, Marlin 1949-1954, Rockdale 1955 until his retirement. Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home was in charge or arrangements.
