Margaret Eleanor Lengert
(December 9, 1912 - February 18, 2012)
Margaret Eleanor Lengert was born December 9, 1912 in Rockdale, Texas. She was the yongest child of Otto and Anna (Diehl) Lengert who were both natives of Germany.
Margaret graduated from Rockdale High School in 1929. In 1935, she earned a Master of Science degree from the University of texas at Austin. Her Master of Arts in History was earned from the University of Texas in 1946. Her master's thesis, The History of Milam County, is still widely used in historical research about Milam County.
Margaret's teaching career spanned 41 years. She taught at Talbott Ridge for 1 year (1932-33); Minerva for 3 years (1933-36); Navasota for 1 year (1936-37); Rockdale for 6 years (1937-43); Corpus Christi for 5 years (1943-48). She returned to Rockdale in 1948 where she taught for the remaining 25 years of her career.
After her retirement, Miss Lengert was active in historical preservation, including the Milam County Historical Commission, and the Milam County Museum. She was also active in the Milam County Retired Teachers. Her historic old home located on Ackerman Street is one of the oldest homes in Rockdale.
Miss Lengert passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2012. She reached the age of 99 years, 2 months, and 9 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; Two brothers, Eugene "Sonny" Lengert and Edgar "Eddie" Lengert; Sister, Ruby Hutton.
A Private Memorial service will be held at a later date with Chaplin Margaret Clemings of Odyssey Hospice officiating.
