Shirley Ann McIrvin, 67, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and family members that went before her on Friday, November 14, 2014. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ed Truleson officiating and burial to follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Shirley was born on April 1, 1947 in a little three-room house next to Midway Grocery on Murray Street in Rockdale, Texas. She was the daughter of Robert Cecil McIrvin Sr. and Lucille Luetge. At the age of seven, the family moved to her grandparent’s farm in the Bethlehem community, four miles north of Rockdale. She grew to adulthood on this farm and always had a deep love of the country life.

She attended the Rockdale School System for twelve years and graduated in May of 1965. She then attended Blinn College and Texas Lutheran College. She was successful in earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in education and history. She later did post-graduate work at Southwest Texas State University and Texas University. She taught school for thirty years. She always taught students that others did not want to teach, namely emotionally disturbed students, juvenile delinquents and special education students. She retired from this profession in May of 2007.

Shirley treasured the time she could spend with her son and granddaughter, other family members and friends. She also enjoyed flower gardening and sharing plants she had rooted with friends. She loved doing family history books and had completed well over one hundred books for family and friends. She was known to often say that although her legs did not work so well, that was no excuse to let her mind go dull.

Shirley is preceded in death by her mother on January 8, 1984 and father on September 7, 2001; her grandfather, Otto Luetge on November 8, 1977 and grandmother, Selma Luetge on April 24, 1995; her precious sister, Donna McIrvin on October 30, 2010; and her dear brother Cecil McIrvin on December 4, 2011.

She is survived by her wonderful son, Corey McIrvin of Rockdale; her beautiful granddaughter, Katie McIrvin of Stephenville; sisters, Delores Beran and Debbie McIrvin both of Rockdale; nephews, Alvin Beran of Rockdale, Justin and Ryan McIrvin of Cedar Park; niece, Tracy Beran of Rockdale; her chosen daughter and helper, Sonya Garcia; her goddaughter, Sabrina Vega; and her godson, Joel Vega.
