A memorial service for Thomas R. “Tom” Underwood, 76, of Rockdale was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, at First Christian Church in Rockdale with Dr. Greg Nichols of First Christian Church in Lexington officiating.
Mr. Underwood died Tuesday, March 11, in a Temple hospital..
A resident of Rockdale for the past 41 years, he previously lived in Lexington.
He was born Dec 13, 1926 in Bartlett to Thomas Roger and Winnie (Gilliland) Underwood. He married Ascenia Lorena Peebles in Lexington on Aug. 15, 1952.
Mr. Underwood was a graduate of San Gabriel High School, received his bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University and received his master’s degree from the University of Texas.
He was a teacher, coach and principal in Sharp, Rogers, Lexington and Rockdale until his retirement. He was also a rancher.
Mr. Underwood was a World War II veteran having served in the U. S. Navy.
He was a member and elder of First Christian Church in Rockdale and a member and counselor with AA.
Preceding him in death were a son, Fred Peebles Woodward on May 23, 1997 and a daughter-in-law Julie Underwood.
Survivors are his wife, Ascenia “Dose” Underwood of Rockdale; a son, Thomas Roger Underwood III of Athens; a daughter, Kay Woodward Van Dorn and husband Paul of Lexington; six grandchildren, Paul Franklin Van Dorn Jr. and wife Laura of Lake Jackson, Amy Wright and husband Russell of Fort Worth, Andrew Woodward and wife Tina of Lexington, Erin Woodward of College Station, Jonathan Underwood of Brenham and Daniel Underwood of Athens; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Van Dorn of Lake Jackson and Margaret Ellen Woodward of Lexington.
