TOMMIE JOE CLARK KILLED IN VIETNAM
Funeral services are pending for Staff Sgt. Tommie Joe Clark, 23, of Rockdale, killed Dec. 16 in Vietnam.
The former Rockdale High School football player, who was a member of the 1962 state-finalist team, is the first Rockdale soldier to die in the war in Vietnam.
Word of Sgt. Clark’s death was received here Friday by his wife, the former Susan Curtis, and by other relatives.
A telegram from the Secretary of the Army stated that Sgt. Clark died “as the result of injuries received when an artillery shell exploded while he was destroying an old ordinance at a munitions demolition sight.”
Funeral arrangements are being made with Phillips & Luckey Company of Rockdale in charge. Burial will be in Rockdale but plans are pending. The body will be flown here as soon as possible, the family has been informed.
Sgt. Clark had been in Vietnam since March 23. He and his wife met in Hawaii in October when Sgt. Clark was on R-and-R leave from Vietnam. They have a son, John Richard Clark, who will be one year old on Dec. 26.
Tommie Joe was born Nov. 6, 1945, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Vernon Clark of San Saba. He attended Rockdale High School where he was a standout defensive lineman on theTiger football team that advanced to the state finals in 1962. He entered the Army in the fall of 1964 and served a year in Korea beginning in August of 1965.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Susan Curtis Clark of Rockdale; a son, John Richard Clark, age 1; one brother, Jack Clark of Rockdale; two sisters, Mrs. Claude Collier and Mrs. Taylor Holland, both of Rockdale; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Vernon Clark of San Saba.
Sgt. Clark was member of the Rockdale Church of Christ.

CLARK, S-Sgt. Tommy Joe of Rockdale. Age 23. Died 12/16/1968. He was killed in an artillery shell explosion in Vietnam. Services held (Monday) at Murray Street Church of Christ, Rockdale. Burial in IOOF Cemetery. Minister Milton Pogue and Minister Harold Hunt officiated. Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He was a graduate of Rockdale High School and member of school's 1962 state finalist football team. He entered the U.S. Army in 1964 and served in Korea from 8/1965 to 8/1966. He was stationed at Ft. Hood on his return from Korea and remained there until he was sent to Vietnam on 3/23/1968. Member of the Murray Street Church of Christ. SURVIVORS: Wife of Rockdale; son, John Richard Clark of Rockdale; parents, M/M Howard Vernon Clark of San Saba; brother, Jack Clark of Rockdale; 2 sisters, Mrs. Claude Collier and Mrs. Taylor Holland, both of Rockdale.
