Valma Bartrella Dorrell Fischer
Valma Bartrella Dorrell Fischer, 97, of Bryan, Texas, passed into eternal life with her Lord on August 4, 2016 at the Manor Nursing Home in Bryan, Texas. Funeral services are currently pending.
Valma was born January 5, 1919 in Reeves, Louisiana to Virgil B. and Claudia (Perkins) Dorrell. She lived her youth in Louisiana and in Orange, Texas where she graduated from Orange High School as valedictorian. At the age of 19, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Womenís University) in Denton, Texas. Later she completed her Masterís Degree from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. She devoted her life to teaching school and taught in Herne, Orange, Marlin and Rockdale.
On June 2, 1940, she married Walter Ernest Fischer in Hearne, Texas. While he served in the Army during World War II, Valma lived and taught school in Marlin, Texas where they also resided for several years after the war and where both her sons were born. From 1952 until 1987 she lived in Rockdale, after which she moved to Bryan.
She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and was a member of the St. Johnís United Methodist Church in Rockdale for many years. Since 1987 she has been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bryan. Valma was active in church projects and organizations, civic organizations, and social activities. She and Walter enjoyed traveling and a special hobby was genealogy wherein she wrote history books on nine branches of the family. She adored her family and was at her happiest whenever she was at a family event.
Valma was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Walter Fischer in 1979 after 39 years of marriage; parents, Virgil B. and Claudia (Perkins) Dorrell; sister, Virgil Franks; brother, Thomas Dorrell; grandson, Patrick Fischer; and great grandson, Zachery Fischer.
She is survived by two sons, Dan Fischer and wife Reba of Gause, Texas and Bob Fischer and wife Lynette of Bryan, Texas; grandchildren, Caren Bowling and husband Bryan, Jimmy Fischer, Preston Fischer and wife Erica, Jason Hobbs and wife Kristi, and Jeff Hobbs and wife Jill; ten wonderful great grandchildren; sister, Claudia Olson and husband John of Corpus Christi, Texas; sister-in-law, Jean Riley of Orange, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
