I wanted to tell my story with the hope of encouraging other RHS classes to develop their websites,
Ginger makes some gag gifts (adult type) and she was selling quite a few on eBay. So we decided that we should have a website. I've been working with computers for years (just using them) but I had no idea of how to start up a website. So I googled and read several pages and Voda Host BlueVoda sounded easy enough to use. So I visited their site. The price was right it's not very expensive and they give you the domain (if it's available) free the first year. They advertise the software is free and it is but you can't publish to another host using the BlueVoda software. You can develop your website but you can't publish it without having a VodaBlue account.
So I signed up on December 30, 2007 hoping I would be able to do it.
They have video tutorials that explain everything you need to know to get a site online. So I read and watched the videos for several days and then I thought I'd give it a shot. I had her home page online that first week. Now realize I redid a lot of things and would stop and go back and watch the videos again. But they also have a community support forum which is a lifesaver. If you can't find the answer to your question, post it and you'll have an answer shortly. And http://www.thegoofygiftshop.com is the result of my efforts and I was pleased to just get it published.
It's basically like drag & drop. You want to insert a picture, you click this button and then click on the page and pick the picture and there it is. You then move it around until you get it just where you want it.
They also offer 24/7 tech support but I have gotten almost all of my questions answered in the forums. Normally a forum 'search' will yield the answer.
So for around $110 you can have a website up in a short time. This fee is an annual fee but it includes the domain name renewal, web hosting, lots of support, and lots of free software. And once you sign up and get your site online, you can put up a 2nd or 3rd site and just pay for the domain name. If you already have a domain name with another host, you can also transfer it to BlueVoda.
Are there better ones out there? I have no idea. I'm not experienced enough to know that. But I can say that I have been extremely pleased with BlueVoda or I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
This is only my second attempt at a web site. Do I make mistakes? Damned right! But I enjoy doing this. And believe me, if I can do it, anyone can do it! I do recommend BlueVoda! Click on the link below for a short video explaining the package. Then compare it with others if you wish.
I certainly don't know all the answers I don't even know all the questions to ask but I will offer my help to any RHS class members that want to get their class online.
